Engine
There are two engine offerings for the 2017 Compass. The front-wheel-drive versions of the Sport, Sport SE, Latitude, and High Altitude come standard with a 2.0-liter, 14 DOHC 16V four-cylinder engine, which provides 141 pound-feet of torque and 158 horsepower. The 75th Anniversary Edition and the four-wheel drive models come standard with a 2.4-liter, 14 DOHC 16V four-cylinder engine that provides 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. <p></p> Three different transmissions are available. The Sport has a five-speed manual transmission. The four-wheel-drive versions of the Sport SE, Latitude, and 75th Anniversary Edition come with a six-speed transmission. Finally, the front-wheel-drive Latitude and High Altitude models come with an AutoStick automatic transmission.
Performance
As far as performance goes, the most impressive feature is the Freedom-Drive II for off-roading, which is optional for the Sport and Latitude four-wheel-drive models. This package includes tow hooks, all-terrain tires, and Hill Descent Control. It also has Hill Start Assist, which helps to prevent rollback when you're climbing rocky or muddy terrain, and a plate shield that protects the fuel tank from debris. <p></p> The estimated EPA for the the front-wheel-drive models is 22 mpg for the city and 26 mpg for the highway, with the 75th Anniversary Edition getting 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The four-wheel-drive Sport SE, High Altitude, and 75th Anniversary Edition provide 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while the Sport gets 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway and the Latitude gets 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
Interior
All five trim levels have 60/40 split-folding rear seats that fold down to provide 53.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Safety Features
Standard safety features include Electronic Roll Mitigation, Electronic Stability Control, advanced multistage front airbags, and supplemental side-curtain front airbags. <p></p> The Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System protects your vehicle by recognizing your ignition key, which is embedded with an electronic chip.
