How to Protect Your Car From Winter Weather

The winter weather can do a number on your car. Whether you're dealing with the salt and sand from the road or harsh winds and ice, you need to protect your vehicle to keep it looking like new. Here are some tips on how to protect your Jeep, Ram, Dodge, or Chrysler from the winter weather.

Give it a Wax Before the Winter Season

Just like we need to protect our skin from the harsh cold of the winter, your car needs protection too. Before the cold weather sets in, apply a polymer wax to the paint. This will help to create a shield against the salt and grime from the road along with protecting the paint from the wind and ice pellets.

Wash it Frequently

You can also protect the paint by washing off the salt. The salt that's so commonly used on winter roads will eat through the paint and corrode your vehicle. Make sure to bring your car into the car wash frequently during the winter; every ten days is ideal. You want to choose a cycle that washes the undercarriage because grime and salt accumulate quickly in this area. To get the most out of the wash, do it early in the day and when the temperature rises above 40 degrees. That way, it'll have time to dry before the temperature drops below freezing again.

Remove Ice Properly

You can damage your vehicle's paint job if you don't remove snow and ice the correct way. Never use an ice scraper on any part of the car except the windows. The hard plastic of the scraper will damage the paint, so the best idea is to turn the car on and let it warm up to melt the ice. Lift large chunks of ice off the car with your hands to remove them so they don't cause scratches.

Use the Sno Brum

The Sno Brum is the best way to remove snow from your Car. The Sno Brum is a foam broom that you can use to both push and pull the snow, and the soft material won't damage the paint on the car. Pull as much as you can off the car using a straight line just in case you do cause a scratch. This will make it appear more like it is part of the paint job.

Spray Wax

You can also add more wax throughout the winter to help protect the car's surface. A spray wax goes on quickly and wipes off in just a few minutes. You can add a layer if you have some extra time on the weekends. If possible, try to apply it when the car is sheltered from the elements; a garage works well for this purpose. While winter weather is harsh on your vehicle, there is no getting around it if you live in a snowy area. You can keep your Jeep in better shape by taking some precautions before winter starts and staying on top of its care throughout the season. Image by Janitors is licensed under CC BY 2.0

5 Tricks to Avoid Paint Damage to Your Jeep

Keeping your car in the best condition inside out will help you preserve its value. Bodywork, including repairing chips in the paint, rust, or complete respraying costs a lot of money. If you would like your Jeep to remain shiny and new, you need to follow the below precautions. Avoid Rocks and Pebbles Whenever you have to go on a road that is not well-made asphalt or has new surface dressing consisting of small pieces of stones, you risk damaging the paint on your car. When new roads are surfaced, you will usually find a warning sign telling you about loose pebbles. Even though people behind you might want to go faster than recommended, you should not speed up. The small chips will be transferred through the wheels to the bodywork and damage the paint on your car. A little patience goes a long way. more Park in the Shade when Possible Direct sunlight might also cause damage to your car's paint. Fading is one of the tell-tale signs of a car having a rough life, even if you usually park your Jeep up in the garage. Make sure that you pick a shaded parking space whenever possible. If you do not have a garage at home but have a sunny driveway, you might consider getting a well-fitting car cover to provide your Jeep with protection from the elements. If your Jeep is parked in a sunny spot for a long time, this might be the cheapest and most effective way of protecting the paint job. Avoid Bad Car Wash Services While automatic car wash devices are designed to prevent damaging your car, this is not guaranteed. Some services wash your car outdoors, without a cover tunnel, on the direct sunlight, which will increase the chemical reaction of the cleaning materials with the paint work. Older car washes sometimes use abrasive brushes that can scratch the surface. Make sure that the wipers do not touch the surface of the car when drying it. You might opt for a car wash that has manual wiping. Do not Scratch off Ice One of the easiest mistakes to make is trying to get rid of ice on the car's surface before you start. While driving with the extra weight might sound unpleasant, if you scratch the surface of your car, you will end up with a huge bill. Try to drive the car on a sunny road and let snow and ice melt naturally. Clean Up Bird Dropping Fast Bird droppings have a high level of acid content and can damage the paint when left on for a long time. Do not try to scratch them off, but visit a professional hand car wash service that will get it off before it dries on. You might find some non-abrasive cleaning sprays at your local car dealership that will help you get rid of bird droppings on the go without damaging your paint.
