Although both the 2016 Jeep Cherokee and 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee are both trail-rated sport utility vehicles that are equally at home on a dirt track or on main street, there are some key differences that set apart these two stablemates. The Jeep Cherokee is a capable and attractive small crossover sport utility vehicle that can carry five passengers. The Jeep Grand Cherokee also has seating for five, but as it is a midsize SUV, it provides more room for both people and cargo. Powertrain equipment further differentiate these two Jeep models. Powertrain The Jeep Cherokee offers a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an optional 3.2-liter V6. The Cherokee's four-cylinder engine produces 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. Stepping up to the more powerful V6 rewards buyers with 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque, giving the Cherokee more than ample acceleration. In contrast to the Cherokee's optional V6 power, the Grand Cherokee boasts a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 295 horsepower as its standard power plant. For those who want more power, other engine options include a 5.7-liter V8, a 6.4-liter V8, and even a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel that makes 420 pound-feet of torque. more Performance Properly equipped, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee can hit 60 miles per hour from a stop in under eight seconds, a good showing for its competitive segment. While the trip to 60 takes under eight seconds for a Grand Cherokee as well, the Grand Cherokee is able to tow up to 7,400 pounds. This is a greater towing capacity than that of the Cherokee, which has an optional tow package with a towing capacity of 4,500 pounds. The Cherokee is able to achieve a combined fuel efficiency rating of 25 miles per gallon with its 2.4-liter motor, edging out the larger and comparatively thirstier Grand Cherokee. Interior and Cargo Capacity Although both can be had with a wide array of driver assistance technology, infotainment systems, and interior amenities, the Grand Cherokee does edge out its sibling with its luxury trim levels. That being the case, the cabin of the Cherokee is a nice place to spend some seat time on the way to adventure. The Cherokee is built on a smaller, lighter platform than the Grand Cherokee, but it still has 24.6 cubic feet of cargo space. The larger Grand Cherokee boasts 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space, making it just a bit more capable when it comes to packing in four friends and all the gear for a weekend camping trip. Two- and Four-Wheel Drive Options Although both can be had in four-wheel drive, the Cherokee comes standard with front wheel drive, while two-wheel drive examples of the Grand Cherokee are rear-wheel drive. When it comes to sending power to the wheel, these two vehicles do so with different engine options. Washington Crossing State Park On Christmas Day in 1776, George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River and landed at Johnson's Ferry. The site would later become known as Washington Crossing State Park, and it is a great place to visit in the autumn. Known particularly for its nature trails and lush natural scenery, the park plays host to plenty of flora and fauna, and waiting for the colors to change only makes it that much better. 5. Belleplain State Forest Perhaps one of the most beautiful locations in New Jersey, Belleplain State Forest includes more than 20,000 acres of Atlantic white cedar, oak, and pine trees, which combine to produce a palette of rich colors come October. Visitors can choose to hike, picnic, swim, fish, canoe, bike, and otherwise explore the area to their hearts' content. Wildlife is plentiful here as well, so keep an eye out for local critters. New Jersey has rich natural areas with plenty to offer nature lovers and outdoorsmen alike. The Jeep Renegade Hell's Revenge is a concept model created by Garage Italia Customs, an Italian tuning house. It's named after the difficult Hell's Revenge off-road trail in Moab, Utah, and it was inspired by Harley-Davidson motorcycles. These customized Jeep Renegades have the Milwaukee icon's badges on its doors. The Hell's Revenge was created to celebrate the 25th annual European H.O.G. Rally, a huge Harley-Davidson festival in Portoroz, Slovenia. Jeep was also this special event's main sponsor. Here's some more information about the Hell's Revenge and the Renegade. Exterior The paint job on the Renegade Hell's Revenge is similar to many Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It has four layers of matte black paint, and fluorescent red, orange, and yellow flames cover the front grille. They also decorate the hood, the front fenders, and most of the front doors. The car has a special clear coat designed for fluorescent paint, a custom front skid plate, a suspension lift, and unique dark-finished alloy wheels with custom BF Goodrich tires. LED spotlights are mounted low on each side of the A-pillars, the supports for the roof on either side of the windshield. more Interior The fluorescent flames are also on the dashboard, and the seats are wrapped in Foglizzo Nappa leather with black denim inserts. Jeep Renegades have large cabins with all the controls in the center stack, including an all-wheel drive lock and Selec-Terrain switches. The front and back seats are comfortable and spacious, and there's plenty of headroom. You can even choose removable My Sky roof panels that fit under the floor in the 18.5-cubic inch cargo area. Engine There were no changes to the Renegade Hell's Revenge powertrain or engine. The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo I-4 engine is standard. It produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and it comes in front- and all-wheel drive. A six-speed manual is the only available transmission. The 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4 is optional. It comes standard with Renegade Limited and Trailhawk models, and it's the same engine the Jeep Cherokee has. It offers 180 horsepower, 175 pound-feet of torque, and a new nine-speed automatic transmission. You can choose between two all-wheel-drive systems. Jeep Active Drive routes power to the rear wheels with a quick-connecting power transfer unit. The Renegade Trailhawk's Jeep Active Drive Low lets first gear double as a low range. Options The optional rear cross-path detection and ParkView rear back-up camera systems activate automatically when you shift your Renegade into reverse. A touch screen lets you see what's behind you and sensors detect oncoming traffic. The available forward collision warning system lets you know when you approach another vehicle too rapidly and adjusts your speed to help avoid a collision. You can also choose an optional LaneSense lane departure warning system to warn you if you drift out of your lane by accident. Even if you've lived in the city all your life, you can find fun new places to take your kids. Here are some of the best spots for children in NYC. 1. The American Museum of Natural History This great museum is so big, you can't see everything in one day. Look at the floor plan before you start exploring so you and your family can see the exhibits that interest them most. The dinosaur fossils are the biggest attraction. Kids will also enjoy the animal dioramas in the Halls of African and Asian Mammals, the giant replica of a blue whale, and a variety of gems and minerals, including the 56-carat Star of India sapphire. The Hayden Planetarium and the Rose Center for Earth and Space are attached to the museum. more 2. Dylan's Candy Bar Dylan's Candy Bar has a giant lollipop tree and candy patterns on the walls and in the stairs. This huge store has three floors and offers more than 7,000 confections, one of the biggest candy selections anywhere. The New York Transit Museum The New York Transit Museum is in a decommissioned subway station that was built in 1936. It tells the story of New York's subways, starting with how the tunnels were dug from 1904 to 1927. Visitors can walk through vintage subway cars and see the many types of tokens that riders used before the Metrocard. Kids can also learn about the development of bus and trolley and transportation by exploring a 12-seat bus and a child-sized trolley. Older children can interact with old turnstiles at the Fare Collection exhibit, and there are free programs for kids every Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. However, the museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. 4. Children's Museum of the Arts In this interactive museum, families can learn about art through interesting exhibits and experiment with clay, sound, animation, and more. Art by children is on display along with items from established artists. The Fine Arts Studio lets kids paint, draw, or sculpt their own art. You can also learn how to animate a short film or record a song in the Media Lab and Sound Booth. Children under 5 have their own art studio, and there's a bouncy ball pond for free play. Different workshops are available every day. You can borrow a smock for your child, but you should get ready for spills by visiting in old clothes. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. Soft Top Pros A soft top is easy to put on and easy to take off. It also folds up making it easier to store away when you are not using it. A soft top is also less expensive than a hard top. If you are on a budget, this is a more affordable option. more Soft Top Cons Before choosing a soft top keep in mind where you are driving your Jeep. So you have a new Jeep with the huge tires that you plan on taking off-roading. But what is it that makes a vehicle good at this extreme activity? One of the most important factors is the vehicle's torque. Here is what you need to know about torque and why it is important when it comes to off-road driving. What Is Torque? In the most basic terms, torque is the amount of power you have when it comes to turning. The torque on a car is what helps it to accelerate, which is important in an off-road vehicle if you are trying to power up and over hills or boulders. It is defined as a rotating force that may result in a motion but not necessarily. Torque is what allows you to keep up your momentum when driving over boulders without stressing out the engine. more What is the Difference Between Torque and Horsepower? The amount of torque at the wheels of a Jeep determines how fast the vehicle can reach a speed while the horsepower is how fast the vehicle can travel. The horsepower of a vehicle is arrived at by multiplying the torque by the RPM's and dividing it by 5,252. Torque is actually easier to measure than horsepower. How Do Horsepower and Torque Work Together? You need both torque and horsepower to get your vehicle up and going, and the two work together to keep you going. The torque will get the vehicle in motion, and once you are up and going if you are on flat ground the horsepower will help the truck maintain its speed. Which is Better for Off-Roading? As you can imagine, speed is not as important as acceleration when you are crawling over rocks or pushing through the sand and mud. Torque is more important because it provides the force you need to get through. A high low-end torque is one of the most important things to have when you need your Jeep to get you over uneven and rough surfaces. This also gives you more control over the vehicle when you are in an unsteady driving area. Why is Low-End Torque Important in Off-Roading? Low-end torque is the amount of torque at a low number of revs, usually between 2000 and 3000. This is different from high-end torque which is the amount of torque at a high revolution such as 4000 or 6000. Low-end is important in off-road driving because it keeps the engine from working too hard when you need to maintain your momentum over rough terrain without a lot of speed. A high low-end torque doesn't need a lot of revolutions per minute, and it means you don't need to press as hard on the throttle to keep the car moving forward. It is important to know the difference between torque and horsepower before you can understand why it is important for off-roading. Off-road driving is a popular activity with Jeep drivers, but there are times when you find yourself stuck. Whether you are driving in the mud on purpose or you get stuck there by accident, there are a few things you can do to get your Jeep out of a sticky situation. Move the Tires Slowly Keep in mind that the reason you are stuck is because your tires do not have any traction. First, move the steering wheel from side to side to create some extra room for the tires to move. Then press down gently on the accelerator to allow the weight of the vehicle to make the tires grip down on the mud. If you are driving an automatic, use the lowest gear, and if you are driving a manual transmission, use the highest gear. more Dig Out You can also create some room for the tires to grip by digging out the mud in front of the tires. Once you have some extra room, take the floor mat, a blanket or anything else you might have in the vehicle and wedge it under the tires. Slowly move the car forward until the tires can grip on to the item and get going out of the mud. If you don't have anything in the car you can also gather sticks and branches to put under the tires too. Deflate the Tires If you can, let just a small amount of air out of the tires. This  increases the  area where the tires meet the ground to help give you better traction. It will also help to give them some more room to move. If you do let some air out, remember to inflate them again to the proper pressure before going far. You also want to drive slowly at first to help get rid of the mud that might be stuck to the tires. Rock It Out If slow acceleration is not working try rocking it out. Put it in first and accelerate, then change it to reverse and accelerate. Repeat this no more than 8 times so you don't do any damage to the car. You can also try turning the tires while you accelerate to gain more traction. Always Drive Prepared If you are planning on going off-roading, then you should carry items in the car to help you get out if you get stuck. Keep a shovel, a hi-lift, a tree strap, and some chains in the Jeep with you. This gives you some options so you can try a few different things if one doesn't work. If you are prepared for different circumstances, you can get out of almost any muddy situation you find yourself in. Even if you are not planning on driving in the mud it is a good idea to keep some things in the vehicle in case of an emergency. The City Reliquary It's a bold move to name a museum a reliquary, but this oddball spot's homage to New York City is a bit of a religious shrine. Situated on Brooklyn's Metropolitan Avenue, this museum of sorts is home to all kinds of New York memorabilia, from antiquated to modern. A few of the highlights include 1939 World's Fair souvenirs, old deli signs, and even old subway and bus passes. It's free to hop on by, but there's a $5 suggested donation. Opened in 1904, the station remains as one of the most beautiful public works in the world, although trains stopped coming here in 1945. Several famous architects, including ones that built Mount Rushmore and St. John the Devine Catholic Church helped design the project, giving it beautiful domed ceilings, skylights, chandeliers, and other opulent features. The station is just a short walk from the Brooklyn Bridge station, so taking the 4, 5, or 6 train is the easiest way to get there. Every so often, the city also hosts tours, so keep an ear and an eye out for that information. 2016 marks the 75th anniversary of the Jeep name, and the automaker has already begun to celebrate in dramatic fashion with the release of 23 limited edition models. Each of these models is sure to please even the most lukewarm Jeep fan, and you'll find solace in the fact that you'll drive a truly unique car. Out of 23 choices it's hard to pick the best ones, but here's a preview of some of the coolest of the year. 1. Renegade Dawn of Justice While this particular model (pictured above) doesn't have anything to do with the 75th anniversary, it's nonetheless one of the most interesting and coolest cars from Jeep. Inspired by the "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" flick, the Dawn of Justice personifies the movie just as well as you'd expect. Its exterior and interior present a dark and mysterious appearance thanks to a monochrome black theme. It also features one-of-a-kind 18-inch gloss black wheels and an exclusive metal diamond shift knob, which when paired with the color scheme, will make your inner geek scream with delight. more 2. Wrangler Black Bear The journey into the 75th anniversary limited edition models begins with the Wrangler Black Bear. Even the name cries out with ferocity, and its performance matches it accordingly. The first added feature you'll notice is the hood, complete with a tasteful, yet original, topographic map paint job. Other unique specs of the Black Bear include black cloth sedoso seats with sport mesh fabric, sport bar grab handles, and iron-gray interior accents. If you're looking for something you can hold over the heads of regular Wrangler owners, this is truly it. 3. Wrangler Backcountry If you're not opposed to driving a Jeep with Extreme Purple as the color, the Backcountry is a great fit for off-road enthusiasts. It comes standard with off-road rock rails to prevent undercarriage damage, as well as off-road bumpers to push any obstacles out of the way. In addition, you'll get luxurious interior features like heated, leather-trimmed seating, a nine-speaker, all-weather Alpine premium audio system, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. For bouldering, the Backcountry comes with a Tru-Lok locking rear axle to make sure you don't slip on your way up the rocky terrain. 4. Grand Cherokee 75th Anniversary Edition The true Jeep fan will want to get their hands on the Grand Cherokee 75th Anniversary Edition, as it will soon become a collector's item. However, it isn't just a gimmick. It has a plethora of features starting on the exterior such as beautiful gold and bronze paint accents, an updated look for both the body style and the headlights, and 20-inch aluminum bronze wheels. Inside, you'll have access to your smartphone through the vehicle's head unit, thanks to Uconnect, which comes with a vivid 8.4-inch touchscreen display. It also has heated seats and a heated steering wheel, as well as a single-pane sunroof that's perfect to recline, relax, and soak up the scenery. The 2016 lineup of limited edition Jeeps raises the bar to another level. While it's unlikely that this amount of options will become available soon, that just means you need to buy one now.
